A geometric mass-preserving redistancing scheme for the level set function

چکیده
In this paper we describe and evaluate a geometric mass-preserving redistancing procedure for the level set function on general structured grids. The proposed algorithm is adapted from a recent finite element-based method and preserves the mass by means of a localized mass correction. A salient feature of the scheme is the absence of adjustable parameters. The algorithm is tested in two and three spatial dimensions and compared with the widely used partial differential equation (PDE)-based redistancing method using structured Cartesian grids. Through the use of quantitative error measures of interest in level set methods, we show that the overall performance of the proposed geometric procedure is better than PDE-based reinitialization schemes, since it is more robust with comparable accuracy. We also show that the algorithm is well-suited for the highly stretched curvilinear grids used in CFD simulations. Copyright q 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

An Efficient, Interface-Preserving Level Set Redistancing Algorithm and Its Application to Interfacial Incompressible Fluid Flow
Abstract. In Sussman, Smereka, and Osher [J. Comp. Phys., 94 (1994), pp. 146–159], a numerical scheme was presented for computing incompressible air–water flows using the level set method. Crucial to the above method was a new iteration method for maintaining the level set function as the signed distance from the zero level set. In this paper we implement a “constraint” along with higher order ...
متن کاملA New Mass-conserving Algorithm for Level Set Redistancing on Unstructured Meshes
Abstract. The Level Set Method is becoming increasingly popular for the simulation of several problems that involve interfaces. The level set function is advected by some velocity field, with the zero-level set of the function defining the position of the interface. The advection distorts the initial shape of the level set function, which needs to be re-initialized to a smooth function preservin...
متن کاملA Finite Element Level Set Redistancing Method Based on Gradient Recovery
We introduce a new redistancing method for level set functions. This method applies in a finite element setting and uses a gradient recovery technique. Based on the recovered gradient a quasi-normal field on the zero level of the finite element level set function is defined and from this an approximate signed distance function is determined. For this redistancing method rigorous error bounds ar...
متن کاملA BINARY LEVEL SET METHOD FOR STRUCTURAL TOPOLOGY OPTIMIZATION
This paper proposes an effective algorithm based on the level set method (LSM) to solve shape and topology optimization problems. Since the conventional LSM has several limitations, a binary level set method (BLSM) is used instead. In the BLSM, the level set function can only take 1 and -1 values at convergence. Thus, it is related to phase-field methods. We don’t need to solve the Hamilton-Jac...
متن کاملFinite Element-Based Level Set Methods for Higher Order Flows
In this paper we shall discuss the numerical simulation of higher order geometric flows by level set methods. Main examples under considerations are surface diffusion and the Willmore flow as well as variants and of them with more complicated surface energies. Such problems find various applications, e.g. in materials science (crystal growth, thin film technology), biophysics (membrane shapes),...
